Rila

Range of the Rhodope Mountains in southern Bulgaria, site of a monastic community founded by St. Ivan Rilski in 927. (The monastery moved to its present location from a site a few kilometers away in 1335.) Since at least the XV Century, Rila Monastery has been a dominant force in Bulgarian religious and secular culture. Many of the present buildings, however, are more recent, built in the aftermath of an 1835 fire.
