Neoplatonism


Philosophical school which was extremely influential in the pagan Roman Empire; it claimed to be a secret or occult philosophy taught by Plato to those who had mastered the more exoteric public philosophy of the Socratic dialogues. Several of the early Church Fathers were concerned either with refuting or with "baptizing" Neoplatonist ideas.
