Bishop of the American Diocese from 1870-1877, who transferred the see
from
Alaska to San
Francisco. Fluent in English and the author of a Russian-language
history of American Protestantism, he was one of the first Orthodox
hierarchs to imagine an Orthodox future for the United States.
