Axum

(Ethiopic: Aksum)

The original ancient capital of Ethiopia. Today it remains a religious center, housing what the Ethiopian Church says is the Ark of the Covenant. The obelisks of Axum (pre-Christian) are an architectural wonder of the world, although many were stolen and brought to Italy by Mussolini. For the history of the entire Axumite Empire, which is what people frequently mean by "Axum" rather than the city, see Ethiopia and Sheba.
