APOCRYPHA

A largely Western term for ostensibly Biblical works not admitted into the canon of scripture. (Note that the deuterocanonical books are not considered apocrypha by Orthodox or Roman Catholics.)

From the Orthodox perspective, the term is excessively broad, including an entire spectrum of works ranging from clearly spurious and/or heretical material to possibly authentic writings which the Church has deemed of secondary importance. In between are the many writings which have been altered to an unknown extent by heretics, and others which are Orthodox in content but of uncertain authenticity.
